Funding for Students

Working for the Center is a great way for graduate students to fund their education while gaining valuable experience, Geographic Information Science (GISc) expertise, and references for future employment.  Each year the Center employs a group of students to perform tasks relating to its active grants and contracts.  Candidates are selected from incoming graduate applications received by the geography department.  If you are interested in being a research assistant for the Center, complete a graduate application for admission and contact Dr. Rick Bunch (rlbunch@uncg.edu, 336.334.3916), or Anna Tapp (aftapp@uncg.edu, 336.334.3916).

Assistantship Qualifications

  • Full time graduate student (at least 6 hours per semester).
  • Experience working with the latest ESRI mapping products.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to focusing on the class work and the assistantship, not accepting other employment for the duration of the assistantship (or no more than 10 hours of outside employment, if hired part-time by the Center).

Assistantship Benefits

  • Tuition waiver for the duration of the assistantship.
  • Stipend amount equal to the current University guidelines.
  • Depending on the case, University fees may also be paid by the Center.
  • In many cases assistantships offer summer stipends.
