Rick has spent his academic career researching spatial processes through GIScience. His primary research focus is in the field of spatial cognition, analyzing how people process geographic space. His earliest work focuses on how to effectively communicate geographic space through map design. Rick founded the Center for GIScience in 2006, forming a research entity dedicated to using the tools of GIScience for a variety of research and practical applications.

Anna received her Master's degree from UNCG with a research focus in GIS modeling and telecommunications mapping. Her job is to manage everyday operations of the Center and to facilitate the completion of its contracts. Anna is concurrently pursuing a PhD in geography, with a research interest in accessibility modeling.
